hi, I’m Caleb
[I] read - write - make gardens - listen to music too loud
[I] research creative practice + work
I’m a landscape architect, design educator and communicator. I’ve worked with designers, architects, landscape architects and engineers to envision and realize gardens across the United States and Caribbean. My studio, Coastal Vista Design, creates gardens and public spaces - mostly (but not only) on Sanibel and Captiva Islands. I teach design communication, planting design, professional practice, and theory of landscape architecture at Florida International University. By invitation, I’ve been on the Book Awards committee for the American Horticulture Society since 2020. My writing is frequently published in Horticulture, The American Gardener, and Land8.
In March 2023, I moved to Eugene, Oregon. I’m currently learning new ecotypes and plant communities - while enjoying getting reacquainted with temperate plants. You can see my latest discoveries on Instagram.
Something that’s recently come into focus for me: while I love landscapes, my driving interests aren’t really so much in the gardens themselves. Instead, I’m compelled to better understand creative work and practice. Come learn with me at the practice blog and weekly newsletter.

Guess I’ve always liked plaid…
